.NU Domain Launches Numeric Domain Names

As of 10 June, .NU registry revised its policies and began accepting the registration of numeric domain names using number or dashes – such as such as 212.nu. 10-4.nu, or 3663.nu (the English word “food.nu” on a mobile phone keypad.)

Since 1997 .NU Domain’s policies have restricted the registration of number-only and number-with-hyphen domains. Last year, .NU Domain modified this policy slightly and began allowing the registration of 1- and 2-character numeric names as part of its launch of a Premium Domain Name service. But as of 10th June, with some exceptions, .nu is permitting general registration of any combination of numbers or numbers-with-hyphens.

There are two classes of numeric .nu domain names:

  • Premium Numeric Names, comprised only of numeric names using three numbers or numbers in combination with a hyphen (1-4.nu)
  • Standard Numeric Names, comprised of all other numeric and numeric-with-hyphen combinations up to 63 characters long.

Names that are five numeric characters long, which are commonly used as postal codes, and certain other numeric names of high public or private interest, including 888.nu, 411.nu, and others will not be released for registration during the June 10th 2008 Landrush period.

Every individual, business or organization worldwide is eligible to purchase a .NU domain name, so get your .nu domain name today!

About .NU domain name

.NU is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to the island state of Niue. It was one of the first ccTLDs to be marketed to the Internet at large as an alternative to the gTLDs .com, .net, and .org. Playing on the phonetic similarity between nu and new, it was promoted as a “new” TLD in which there was an abundance of good domain names available. However now most of the top .nu’s have been taken.

The domain is particularly popular in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, as nu is the word for “now” in Swedish, Danish and Dutch. Partially owing to restrictive domain rules for the ccTLD assigned to Sweden, .se, .nu was used for creative marketing of websites such as www.TV.nu. However, the .se domain was generally considered more professional than .nu and .com. Registrations of Internationalized domain names and Unicode special characters are also allowed.
