Fundraising online is a real challenge. There are so many worthy causes competing for donations that it can be hard to stand out. Whether you are Children In Need or the local community group, having the right domain is an important part of helping potential supporters find you in the fog of everything that exists online.
Novelist and journalist Peter Ranscombe was looking for a suitable domain to publicise a campaign he’s involved in throughout November. Peter is part of a Scottish Book Trust initiative called Bookfellas which encourages men to read for pleasure and to their children, to help raise attainment in schools.
Since November is also Movember – the month in which men grow (or attempt to grow!) beards and moustaches to raise global awareness about men’s health – Peter decided to combine the two and needed a domain to tie them together. He chose www.beardsforbooks.scot .
Peter says, “I chose the domain name beardsforbooks.scot because it was fun and memorable. Using a .scot domain name to raise funds for a Scottish charity also had a nice symmetry to it. I had already bought my own .scot and .co domain names through Easyspace, so I knew the registration system was quick and easy, as was the domain forwarding procedure to link the address to my Just-Giving page.”
Peter is one of 50 men who’ve been brought together by the Scottish Book Trust to help raise £50,000 to ensure that everyone in Scotland has the same opportunity to thrive through reading and writing. “As an author and a journalist, reading is a subject that’s very close to my heart,” he explains. “I signed up as a ‘Bookfella’ and pledged to raise £1,000 by growing a beard during November 2016.”
So far Peter says the beard is growing, as are the donations – though he’s got the shaver at the ready come the end of the month!
